A History of the Brixham Buccaneers
The Brixham Buccaneers were formed in spring 2007.
Brixham Pirate Day is the "flagship" of the Brixham Buccaneers! Traders were encouraged to dress as pirates, fly flags and decorate their shops with bunting etc. All events in 2007 took place on the Quay under the old Fish market and centred around a pirate cutout, a face painter, balloon modeller ,a pirate being soaked in the stocks and a knot tying display.
We had a popular monthly colouring competition (that was also circulated around many local schools) and a "hunt the pirate" town trail. We encouraged traders to take advantage of excellent value floral displays and the chance to have details of their businesses on the www.brixhamnews.com website.
We helped to ensure we had christmas lights in the town and we set wheels in motion to try and obtain concessions from the Council for when regeneration work is underway. We were also proud to be part of the Brixmas Christmas Procession.
We had a busy winter 07-08 with many meetings planning activities for 2008.
The Brixham Pirate Thursdays were much more widely publicisied in 2008 and held in 2 different locations, one indoor and one outdoor. In 2008 we teamed up with Greenway ferry services to provide treasure hunts and pirate cruises. There was a Johnny Depp lookalike and a town crier made his presence in town.
In 2008 we had an exciting new limerick competition, live music, a "dress up and be photoed" photo shoot facility, and a wonderful puppet theatre for which I wrote the script and "manipulated" the evil Pirate Greenbeard!
We had a busy winter 08-09 with many meetings planning activities for 2009 including a festival for MayDay bank holiday weekend.
The festival was a great success - the world record attempt (greatest number of pirates in one place) was well attended on May 3rd and Guinness confirmed (August 2009) that a gathering of 1467 pirates on May 3rd in Brixham was a NEW WORLD RECORD.
New for 2009 - Pirate Hoopla, and 2 new puppet show scripts introducing newcomer Squawk the parrot! Pippin, a real parrot was also present on some occasions and the craft workshop was now to be found on the Quay where it proved to be very popular!
Our mascot is Chalmondley who when he entered the fancy dress competition (held late afternoon). usually won a prize because so far he was the only dog dressed as a pirate that has ever entered the competition!
We lost the world record to Portland USA but regained it on May 2 2010 during our second highly successful Pirate and shanty festival, when we had a gathering of 1744 pirates!
Our 2010 Pirate Days were well recieved and very happy, and we were thrilled with the number of children coming down to the quay already dressed up as pirates! New this year was Liz Phillips 'Rat in a hatch' game which caused much amusement! A new puppet "Jasper Parrot" made an appearance.
After seting a new world record for 9/10 mile of pirates on May 1 2011 we had another successful season of Pirate days with a new puppet theatre and script.
We launched 2 pirate themed waymarked walks, and alongside these launched an exciting photographic competition!
Our last pirate day for 2011 was held on Sept 1 and a new season of our Social Club was underway - all welcome!
During 2012 we planned to have a PIrate Presence in town on many Thursdays when there isn't a Pirate Day planned. It is small affair, just a few pirates walking around or sitting at a pavement cafe. Most likely it is between 3 and 4 pm and in the centre of Brixham.
The first of these pirate presence days was held on Thurs 22 Dec 2011 when 7 fully dresed pirates went round Brixham town centre shops creating havoc and wishing all and sundry a merry christmas. These pirates ended up introducing themselves to Santa in the Grotto in the Edge. A good time was had by all!!
We planned extra dates for 2012 cullminating on Speak Like a Pirate Day.
Another "New for 2012" was our meeting in pubs on a weekly basis during the summer months, future details to be found in the Events page on ths website.
Out of season, why not look in at our Social Club - meets on thursdays at 1.15 pm at the Beacon of Light in Mount Pleasant Road.
New attractions for 2013 include the return of Rat in the hatch hosted by Liz Phillips and Dan's wonderful fire juggling show.
On the Arts and crafts stall we welcomed sand art where children could make their own keying, bangle etc. The colouring competition was passed over in place of a spot the difference competition and the pirate Hunt was refreshed and re-instated. Music on the harbourside this year was provided by Ric.
Details coming soon.
